Concert: Snoop Dogg and Snoop Lion

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to photograph Snoop three times in concert, and once, quickly during an interview after the only show in Vancouver I haven’t shot in the last six years. The first was when I was still cutting my teeth, and my first BIG hiphop star back at the Commodore Ballroom. He came again, to the Pacific Colliseum, and didn’t sell out, so next time it was back to the Commodore twice in two years, and to the past outing, reincarnated as a Lion, at The Malkin Bowl in Stanley park, which I have usually covered acts in pouring rain. No such luck this time, though the rain came later that night.

ARCHIVE: The Dreadnoughts ring in 2010

After looking through the archives for an image I needed to update, I came across a show I particularly enjoyed, and figured I would dust off some of the images and share them. This set is from New Years 2010, and features an eclectic Vancouver band, The Dreadnoughts. The shot I was looking for to update is at the end of the post, and remains one of my favorite concert catches.

Concert: Set to Stun live at The Cellar in Vancouver

Down in Vancouver’s darkest club, or at least one of them lies a 20ft stage with very minimal lighting. Set to Stun, an alternative rock quartet out of Vancouver were playing a gig, opening up for Vancouver heavy-weights Fake Shark Real Zombie. As it was a bit of a big deal, they hired me on to capture the moments that needed to be caught. I was quite happy with what I came away with, and I know they are, as well.

Concert: Cityreal opens for Method Man

To be honest, before about seven months ago at a Tech9 concert in Vancouver, I had only once heard the name Cityreal and only knew one song – “Passing me by”, which is embedded after the photos. He offered me the disc he made in 2010 with Bluesman Wes Mackey when we were backstage shooting Tech for Issue 18 of ABORT Magazine, and I have been hooked ever since. I’ve written, as have others that he has an uncanny ability to draw a crowd at shows, and I genuinely feel honored to be a part of his up-coming as an artist.

The photos below are from March 7th, at the Commodore Ballroom during an opening set for Wu’s Method Man. Enjoy

Concert: Marilyn Manson at The Queen E Theatre

I was never the huge fan many others were, as in I never dressed goth-y as a response to his music, but I always appreciated what the shock rocker was capable of doing to society. The man is quite intelligent, and plays his character amazingly well. I was happy to have gotten credentials to shoot the show for ABORT Magazine

Concert: Madchild’s Dope Sick Tour

It has already been a little bit of a slow year for concert photography. For me at least. When I took over as Editor of ABORT Magazine I knew that I would be spending the majority of my time behind the scenes, as my staff are deserving of most every show, and while I have wanted to shoot some recent ones, I know it’s not in my best interest to snag all the good stuff for myself. That isn’t to say I won’t be looking at alternate arrangements to get back out there shooting, but for now – It will be the few shows that I really really want.

Starting off the night was Vancouver local (in fact the whole tour was locals) Cityreal. Cityreal has an uncanny ability to open a show to a packed floor. I have honestly never seen loyalty to an up and coming act that I have from his fans, on two occasions now.

Vancouver’s own Chin Injeti will at least be clearing space for two new Grammy nomination medals over the Christmas season, anticipating February 10th’s Staple Center awards night. Having previously shared the much coveted Grammy for Eminem’s “Recovery”, Chin is again primed to take first prize for his work on Pink’s Billboard hit “Truth about Love” which is up for Best Pop Vocal album of the year, and Christian rap artist Lecrae and his latest album “Gravity”, which is set to take on the best Gospel album of the year category.
