Street: First days of Spring

It’s been a little while since I have had any street photographs to share. That’s mostly been because of poor weather, but also due to the fact my Leica is still not fixed, as it has gotten put off week to week to week since I don’t have a lot of film right now. April should see a huge order go through, and the M6 fixed – but until then, here are some more shots with the RICOH GR1s

I really wish that the windows on the seabus had tinting in them.  A bit of an ironic shot – reading Life of Pi on the boat.

Street/Event: Annual February 14th Women’s Memorial March

One of the things I look forward to the most every Feb 14th isn’t Valentines day as I don’t need a holiday to love my special lady more (seeing as every day I should be doing that), but the Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Women from the Downtown East Side of Vancouver. It’s a very powerful event, and I am honored to have been a part of it through my camera three of the last four years. It’s one of those days that you can tell lifts a heavy burden off the shoulders of survivors, and fills the hearts of friends, family members of the DTES women, and a large contingent of complete strangers intent on showing their solidarity. I’ll end on that, and let the photos speak for themselves.

Street Photography: Low ISO film in the winter

I’m currently out of film. I dug around at the bottom of the fridge this weekend and pulled out my last two rolls. A 36exp roll of Efke 25iso, and A 24exp roll of Ilford FP4+. I was definitely hoping for a nice bright day last saturday to shoot them, and thankfully I was rewarded with a nice and bright, yet slightly foggy (good for reflected light, I suppose) day in Vancouver

For me there is something about people smoking, and people looking at maps. I got the best of both here ; )

Film: Self developing black and white film at home

I’ve had the darkroom gear that I have needed to do my own processing at home for over a year now, but I never really gave it much of a thought until just last week when I finally picked up some chemicals and decided I would do it myself. Realistically, once you get over the fear that you’re going to mess up your images, its as simple as can be.

Beyond simple actually. Just a little measuring and mixing and you’re gold. I figure I will share a few frames from the first three test rolls I shot and processed.

Film: Rememberance Day 2012, Vancouver B.C.

I quite honestly haven’t been shooting street a lot late fall into winter, so my last full roll was exposed last Rememberance Day, Nov 11th 2012. I scanned it last night, and wanted to share some of my favourite frames.

The streets were basically dead, but those few businesses who were open early had a steady stream of customers.

Big City of Dreams – New York in a minute.

I had the honour this past summer of being a part of a conspiracy to throw a surprise vacation for my photographer roommate Bryan Mollett as part of a TV show titled ‘Operation Vacation’ from a studio here in Vancouver. Everything went off without a hitch, and we sent Bryan off on the trip of a lifetime, with me in tow.
